Learning to play an instrument, read sheet music, understanding music theory, and learning musical styles such as jazz and classical can often be accomplished by taking courses from knowledgeable musicians. There are lots of businesses and schools that teach students how to play instruments such as flute, keyboard, trumpet, clarinet, violin, guitar, and piano, but you will want to find one that has an instructor that has a teaching style you like. Ask the company how many years they have been in business. You should also ask how long the musicians that work for them have been instructors. There are lots of virtuosos in the world who can play wonderfully, but that does not necessarily mean they make good instructors. Ask if the school has group and individual classes. You might prefer playing with other students when learning how to play jazz and classical scores because you will be able to learn from knowledgeable virtuosos in your class, but you might want one on one attention when learning about notes, chords, scores, and music theory. Ask about the costs of taking courses from different instructors. Obviously you want to find the class taught by an artist who can share the techniques that you want to learn, but you might find that the cost differences impact your decision as well. When you ask the company reps your questions, be sure to pay close attention to the level of courtesy that they use when answering you. This can often indicate how much the company and musical artists value their customers.
